+Big Blue "It's our language" not anymore. "and we'll speak it as we choose" true, but that applies to all english speakers, native or not. Language is the ultimate form of direct democracy. And the people of England proper are a minority of those speakers and therefore also no longer in charge of how the language evolves. Also, quite frankly, plenty of brits and americans have commented on how some of us non-native speakers (in my case Norwegian, but also the Swedes) actually having better english then the natives both in written and spoken form...

+Robert Pruitt What exactly is incorrect? The differences between british english and american english isn't evidence of english being controlled by or owned by britains. The language isn't governed by how the local evolution is progressing. If version of english used in britain changed then english would still be governed by international consensus and not by british use of the language. It's true that many people learning the language starts with either american or british english or both in school. But those alone don't define the language anymore for most of the languages learners. I suggest that you read this wikipedia article, I think you'll find it interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_English I'd also like to add that international use of the language has quite a influence on language speakers within the countries who use the language as a first language too. Especially when it comes to vocabulary.
