Our biggest losses where still at sea though as our merchant fleet where vital in the allied supply network, especially in the early war. Norway supplied at least a third of the fuel used by the UK during the early parts of the war. As well as lots of food and other resources. Norway was the fourth biggest shipping nation in the world at the beginning of the war, and while the merchant fleet was smaller then the British it was on average newet and more modern. So while only something like 4% of the worlds tonnage was on Norwegian hands, over sixty percent of the diesel powered ships where, while most other merchant ships needed coal for better and worse. We also had way more oil tankers as a percentage of our merchant fleet then most nations, so we where vital in supplying the UK. And that fleet was also vital in funding our government in exile. About 3 670 Norwegian sailors lost their lives serving in the Norwegian merchant fleet during the war... Out of a population of about 3 000 000 in total where about 30 000 where sailors... We also lost about a thousand sailors of foreign nationality on our ships...
