  4. Make a crowdfounding for this stuff without a end date. I'll happily chip in 10-15 dollars for that. =) With enough of us doing that you'll eventually get enough for one of these GPUs. And perhaps a little that will subsidize one of these games so you won't have to invest as much into it yourself. (You'll probably play it yourself later so you paying a bit out of pocket is fair I think ;-)

  7. The invention and creation of both is a bit more complex then just "an American invented this" or "a brit invented this"... For instance the protocolls needed to run an internet (a network of different network all using different protocolls themselves) where kind of an international project to make, and at least two of the people involved where Norwegians from what I've heard. That doesn't mean that those norwegians "invented the internet", but that they and several others all took part in creating the little bits and pieces that was required for the internet to actually exist.

  8. Ayush Dhar Hum, it's not flawless of course... But I've had conversations with people in Russian, Spanish, Portugese, German and French without speaking any of those languages thanks to google translate. It's not easy, and we need to be willing to be open to other possible meanings and stuff, but it does work surprisingly well.

  9. Think of meta programming as inventing something new like multiplication or even pluss in math prior to those things being invented. Or any other new concept. For instance, there was a time when no one had invented zero. Math at the time had to be done with numbers with a value since there was no zero. In a programming language with metaprogramming you can invent such a new concept as zero, define it and use it instead of defining it every single time you need to use the concept.

  11. + @christopherg2347  There's a difference between multithreading and simultanous multithreading. You can multithread with a core that only have a single thread by doing context switching. But then you're not running two or more threads simultanously pr say.

  12. Putting the wildcards at the ends of the examples makes those examples somewhat poor. It leaves questions like how would it actually handle "le* 01" I can imagine an implementation in my head, but I still think you should have covered that.

  14. Senatsu It depends on the type of things being displayed at 24 FPS. There's some things we can't see at 24 fps, and there's some things we can see at over 100 fps, because like I said, our eye sees different things as different speeds.

  17. + @kmambu5950  Not without reason. Intel where the first company that released consumer products with SMT, so it makes sense that you first experienced Intels implimentation of it. Or at least heard about it first. SMT has existed in various forms since the fifties, but most of that time it was just prototypes or research chips etc. Not comercial products.

  18. Metaprogramming is a programming paradigm that can be used in multiple different programming languages. However only a few supports the paradigm fully with features such as homoiconicity... That said, you can do metaprogramming without homoiconicity. It's just way more of a pain to do so...

  20. I very much doubt that this is the biggest working processor out there. There's quite a homebrew CPU community out there, and some people have gigantic processors filling several rooms of their homes, and I've seen at least one video with a system that looked bigger then the parts of this thing that we saw in the video. Of course, I've been wrong before...

  22. +Computerphile Um, there's another issue at hand though, monitors made to run 60 Hz output... When you try to feed them with a number of frames that's not an fraction of that (like 20, since that can be multiplied with 3 to get 60 or 30 because it can be multiplied with 2 to get 60 you end up with... issues...) When you divide 60 with 50 you end up with 1.2 You can't really show each of those 50 frames 1.2 times... You can show them once, or twice, but not in between, unless you update the screen part way through the rendering on the screen causing screen tearing... Got any good suggestions for how to deal with that?

  23. jmicycle True, but there's still just a minority of monitors actually capable of doing that and those are also limited by the hardware combinations you make use of. For instance a freesync monitor with a Nvidia GPU or a G-sync monitor with a AMD GPU simply on't be able to fix a lack of frames.

  25. matsv201 By the same logic you could say that everyone use a german keyboard or a chinese one. The fundamental ones and zeroes don't actually hold any meaning by them selves as such. All the keyboard really does is say that now the user pressed this button, and now he pressed that one. What the button represents is left to the software to define as far as I can understand.

  26. matsv201 And how do you think the Ascii standard is implemented on the computer in the first place? With software. Bios, Operating system, the programs running on it, it's all software. The only thing holding any true value as far as the computer is concerned is the x86-64 instruction set and some numbers. (Although strictly speaking even the x86-64 instruction set is implimented in part through the software of the assemblers) My point is that there's no inherent value to any combination of ones and zeros by it self if they're not defined through software. That's kind of the point of general purpouse computers, they're not programmed through hardware alone. Now you might be right about them being defined to the english language first in the software running on most computers and then redefined at a higher abstraction level. But that doesn't mean that the signals from the letters on the keyboard actually have a fixed meaning. If I'm not much mistaken you could write a operating system in assembly language (something similar to KolibriOS perhaps) where non of those buttons held any meaning releated to the english language at all.

  31. Gull Lars Personally I'd rather sacrifice frame rate and latency then color accuracy and resolution for gaming. shrugs I'm ok with the consequences though, and in most of the games I'm into that isn't a huge deal...

  32. MaxArceus It's a matter of priority. I'm ok with the latency and frame rate being lower. They don't play that much a role to me. On the other hand I like the immersion of high quality and high resolution monitors. I'm thinking of making the LG 34UC98-W my next monitor for instance to go with a RX 480. I'm ok with less then 30 FPS on average.

Hum, honestly I'm curious about what they'd think about Rust running within a browser on top of webassembly.

  39. It's not about not being happy about for loopes. It's about being able to implement for loops on the fly in a language where it doesn't exist already. Or any other feature for that matter. If you can come up with a new consept you can implement it and use user input as a part of the implementation if desired. You can change the code itself based on user input. And sure, you can write a program that can write code for its own code. However what about writing a program that can write the code used to run itself during the runtime? Regarding the spagetti code argument. Yes, partially. But it doesn't have to be.

  41. I can't believe that such a smart guy can be so ignorant as to treat hyperthreading as the name of the technology when it's just a specific implimentation of SMT that is called hyperthreading. After all, other processors like IBMs Power9 or AMDs Ryzen series both have SMT (simultaneous multithreading) just like Intels Skylake and Kabylake processors do. But they do not use the term hyperthreading as that is the name of the specific intel implementation of it. SMT has been around since the 1950s. But it's correct that Intel was the first one that launched a commercial desktop processor with SMT.
