And this is why you guys need to switch to proportional representation... It would also be nice with a parliamentarian system rather than a presidential one as well, but that's probably hoping for too much... But at least with a electoral system using proportional representation you'd have more political parties to negotiate with instead of this kind of deadlock situations forming... Yes, negotiations can be difficult in q proportional system too. But usually you don't have to deal with literally half the legeslature refusing to budge at all, instead both sides end up being made of multiple political parties with different agendas. So centrists can be negotiated with even if the extremists don't want to make a deal. Likewise if there's parties that's on a entirely different political axis like say rural empowerment and spending that don't have a strong opinion on economic matters like taxation etc they can get concessions that's not based on economic policy. Or a religious party that's okay with raised taxes and welfare in return for stricter abortion laws etc... You do end up having to give in to things you don't want, but with multiple parties you can pick and choose... With just two parties you can't go elsewhere if your first option isn't willing to accept something you are prepared to give... Another factor is that having two equally powerful legeslative bodies is harmful... No one else does that.
