The border between Europe and other continents goes through the sea in many cases. Since we used to dominate the Mediterranean sea the border between Europe and Asia and Europe and Africa is generally closer to these two continents then to our shores. Westwards the border is the Mid-Atlantic ridge (and some cultural things like including western Iceland as a part of Europe). Along the Caspian sea however the border hugs European shores.
