In the case of a nuclear war vs the US being able to keep subs with nukes in them away from their shores would give them more reaction time to deal with the nukes that are fired against them. The actual strike capability could perhaps be seen as an auxilerary role? 11:17 Let's just say that my point of view differs from yours when it comes to nuclear power... Also, the engines of non-nuclear powered ships are not necessarily less modern or dated in any way... Speaking of the whole nuclear debate... Swedish non-nuclear subs managed to "sink" a nuclear powered US aircraft carrier due to new non-nuclear engine technology used in said subs (aka the world of non-nuclear engines is not stationary, the technology there is evolving as well, there might very well be a better alternative out there now).
