It's also about the rights to the resources within the waters around the islands both fishing, oil drilling and mining rights as well as strategic importance and national pride for two nations. The only way to settle the issue long term is some kind of compromise from both sides. Sharing the islands is potentially one such solution.

  2. They don't need to accept anything. They're prioritizing other things right now. But the only lasting solution to the conflict is something involving concessions from both sides. This isn't just about what people on those islands feel. But also about things like fishing rights, mining rights, drilling rights and so one as well as the strategic importance of the islands and national pride for both nations.
