  1. Because the Gripen is cheaper to operate day to day and handles battlefield conditions with dispersed maintenance etc better? All your airfields may be gone, most of your technicians dead, the enemy has air superiority etc yet you can keep the Gripen flying while the F35 would struggle without way more ground support.
