  1. Technically not an ally. Finland wants to join the west (NATO etc) but Russia basically has indicated that if the country where to start that process to join then they'd consider that a hostile act from both Finland and NATO... They do not want to add more NATO countries to their borders... Essentially Finland joining might trigger the war that joining such a alliance is meant to protect against... :-/ So any alliance is unofficial at best for both Finland and Sweden... Norway thankfully got a small enough border with Russia and a long enough coastline and enough mountains to allow us to join NATO (since NATO got the edge at sea and the mountains would hopefully slow Russia down enough to allow NATO to act and help while most of the country is still free and somewhat functional)
