In my view Merkels actions where for the most part correct even seen in hindsight. Yes, a slight diversification would have been a good idea. But Germany was providing Russia andChina with a good carrot for good behavior, meaning that both have reasons to listen when Germany speaks, even if they don't agree. Germany has proven itself willing to make mutual advantageous deals that's fair rather than the intentionally one sided ones certain other nations practice. That wins them a lot of good will around the world, not just in the countries in question (China and Russia) but also elsewhere, including in countries Germany isn't trading with. If Russian gas sales to Germany didn't hurt Germany so much it probably wouldn't hiet Russia so much to lose those sales either. Putin is struggling because of that. With more and more American sanctions on China any sanctions that the EU may choose to impose in the future may be way more effective. There's already grumbling in the streets in China due to the reduction in living standards. The EU could potentially push the country over the edge. That wouldn't have been possible if the EU in general and Germany in particular didn't trade so much with them.
