Hum, two trainer Gripens and three single seaters? Would be enough to offer some genuine capability with a relatively limited cost. In day to day operations they could keep the single seaters stored and only use the two two seaters and get some value out of them. Their maintenance is supposedly fairly cheap and easy so it won't require too much investment into training for that since their maintenance is supposed to be done in part by conscripts. They could also contract out patrolling further out, outside the range of the Gripen to those companies using longer range legacy planes. And it would give Ireland the option of operating planes abroad if desired in UN operations at a relatively low cost in places with poor infrastructure since those planes are designed for that.
