There's nothing wrong with being centrist. There's nothing wrong with negotiating with other parties either. The problem is your first past the post electoral system... If you guys had proportional representation both sides would have been split up in multiple parties. Progressives and centrists on both sides would then be able to get some work done without issues with the far right extremists. You could have people from the libertarian right helping out with increasing social freedom. You could have people who are socially conservative but still believe in social welfare and big government, high taxes etc support improving the government etc... Add parliamentarianism on top of that instead of a presidential system and you wouldn't have to deal fights/deadlocks between the legeslature and the executive branch. (The rest of the world doesn't bother with making the executive branch equal with the legeslative branch, nor do we bother with two separate and equally powerful legeslative bodies... Some checks and balances are important, and you need a independent judiciary and central bank, but that's about it)
