One thing many people forget is all the good things we British have given to the rest of the world yet we always seem to be blamed for the bad things done by a few bad people.

@siphomnisi3842 I don't think anyone alive today had anything to do with those two atrocities. There are still atrocities happening in the world and none of those can be legitimately blamed on the UK.

@ddc2957 They also improved life for many people in the countries where they are blamed for doing the bad stuff too!

The beer that they drunk was generally referred to as "small beer" and was very weak. It was much more healthy than the water at the time. I wonder how much some other countries would benefit if they did the same rather than drink dirty water.

@siphomnisi3842 Those are possibly the two worst things that the few bad guys did in "our name". Mind you, there is a bit more to the potato famine than meets the eye at first.

@ddc2957 Even modern day China has benefited hugely from the British!

Are you talking about America? Try some English mustard or horseradish sauce (proper homemade stuff) or maybe some good onions?

@siphomnisi3842 Without force, exploitation is not totally one sided and has to, by some degree, be accepted by the "victims" to continue for any length of time.
2
@headpump You quote "the British felt themselves culturally and intellectually superior to other countries" - Could that actually be why we were so successful at what we did?
2
@gregorysagegreene I am not sure if you realise where most of the enterprising people living in America came from at that time?
2
|Probably why so many people from other countries will do anything to get here!
2
@hyperbole6529 The language spoken by the native population is the most useful and important in the world today - More people are learning it in China than speak it as a first language in the UK!
2
There are a great many other countries where the disparity of wealth far exceeds that in the UK. The US being a very notable example. There is something many of those countries share though that seems to be creeping into Britain (or maybe floating?).
2
Have you ever been there? You learn a lot about why from that!

@siphomnisi3842 Do you know which country/ region the richest man who ever lived (allegedly) came from and how he became so rich?
1
@bendewet1057 One of my daughter in laws parents are Indian born but got really good jobs in the USA because of their education!

"Britain's issue was free enterprise was stifled" - I always find that very amusing given the story of the ferry, The Herald of Free Enterprise" and what caused that disaster!

I find it odd that Sowell (who is normally spot on) mocks the Pope for saying that the so called trickle down theory does not work yet says that there is no such theory. It seems to be the main stay of many governments policies for helping their rich friends and making the excuse that this money will "trickle down" to the lower levels in society.
