The Catholic church was always against contraception as pregnancy is one of the best ways to control half the population and having more children than you can afford keeps most of the others under control. The priesthood are such a fine and upstanding bunch as we all know and they do need a constant supply of choirboys.

No drug can nor will ever suit anyone but to deny it for those who will benefit from it is as bad as forcing it on those who will suffer. A great many will not be affected either way directly but will have a better life as a result of it.

Some (actually all) of the randiest women I have had the pleasure of "being with" were on the pill and none seemed to be depressed as a result!

It is great to see the headlines about what the EU wants to do given that the majority of EU countries are Catholic? Thank goodness we are out of that lot.

@skylinefever Very much like all religions really, their are those good people who use the good bits only and those who use their interpretation of the bits that suit them for their own purposes.

My other half was on it for years and had no problem conceiving her two sons very quickly when she stopped taking it. She kept taking it until well past the point menopause would normally have happened and did not experience any of the problems normally associated with that. She is now in her seventies and has just come back from swimming in the sea in around freezing temperatures. As for libido, I am not one to kiss and tell, but!

@jendoe9436 I am not sure where you got the sterilising bit from? And as you say, abuse occurs across all sectors and regions, but some pretty bad stuff has happened in the name of Catholicism that is widely known. Note that I use the expression "in the name of" rather than "by", because a great many Catholics, like ordinary people from all faiths religious persuasions are good honest people. What You will notice about many Catholic countries is that the rich / poor divide seems great, mind you, that is true of very many countries with a religion based Leadership.

Funny you should say that, I heard on some American programme that it was reducing the fertility of alligators in Florida due to it getting into the water. It sounded quite believable until I saw just how many gators there are out there in every little pond or stream. It is only recently that it dawned on me how many Americans are very anti any form of birth control and that this was probably propaganda for their cause.
