What people forget when it comes to the "own nothing and be happy" mantra is that when you borrow money to buy things you don't actually own them. Not paying off your mortgage as quick as possible and having finance for a new car every few years or buying your huge TV with intallments are classic examples of not owning things yet believing you are happy because you have this stuff.

@olafswida2 I just re-read your comment and noticed the remark about reducing waste. The current business model for just about everything is based on waste - throwing things away that ought to be repairable or because they are not the latest version. If goods cost a bit more but lasted longer and were repairable then there would be much less waste whereas if people don't own something (hire cars are a good example) they don't care about them and always want the latest version.

@olafswida2 You say about the idea being to make people rent everything, but isn't finance / buying on credit also known as hire purchase? The end result is exactly the same because until the loan is paid off, you don't actually own an item and many people will just want a new replacement whatever by then.
