@Goldenhawk583 I have seen a changes in my life time (63 years) that few could really have predicted (well, a lot of sci-fi programmes/ movies did, but that is another matter). Given the independent nature of us English (plus the other British people), I really cannot see this happening in the way some fear it will. Our cities would require such major changes to allow this to happen in the way some people are worrying, that it just isn't realistic. As an aside, I am always puzzled about France (a place I like). 5 times the area of the UK with the same population. Stunning countryside, beautiful old houses (very cheap! ) yet so many of them seem to want to huddle into crowded cities. It must be a cultural thing?

@Goldenhawk583 The French situation is odd, it actually goes back maybe 25 years or more. Of late, they (as in the rural France) have been going through really tough times. Some of it is due to their rather backward (by our standards) farming methods but to be honest I admire them for that.

@Goldenhawk583 Far too many people have no idea where their food comes from. I am trying to make sure my grandchildren are not like that. I take them beating for the local pheasant shoot and show them the carcasses of deer that I have shot.

I love it that you quote Zappa, knowing his famous liking for a certain gang of groupies of "limited maturity".

Sounds like you do not live in a city so there is no problem for you?

@TheSilversepiroth The city I live in (well, I am on the edge of it I suppose) was never built with the idea of private car ownership, except in the "posher" parts as it was largely from the 1930's. Although I am very lucky and have off road parking for 3 cars & a garage joined to the house, most houses have just about enough space outside their narrow roads for one car but many have two. The result is that if I visit my son and his kids I sometimes have to park 10 minutes away (if I am lucky). Unless we destroy our countryside by building on it, there is no way we can have enough parking for any more cars. My Mrs cycles nearly everywhere in town because it is very often quicker at busy times! The traffic in the city is horrific at almost any time of day?

@TheSilversepiroth Do you honestly think this will happen in a short time? I certainly doubt I will live long enough to see it, so don't really care that much.

@vainwretch America is such a big place as you say, I never realised how the different taxes worked out there. If they varied across the UK, I don't think anyone would end up paying much tax at all!

Not that long ago (i.e. in the living memory of some people), in my current (island) city, very few people would have travelled more than 15 minutes to get anywhere they needed. Even when I moved here 30+ years ago, there were people who I worked with who had hardly ever left the city (made me laugh!) - and even kids who had never seen the sand dunes less than 15 minutes from their home.
