@Femboy-Fantasia You are quite right, and in turn we will have to pay realistic prices for our foods. I was talking to some people associated with farming the other day and the cost of fuel just to harvest a field of grain has increased 3 fold over the last 3 years. Food prices have not yet!

@michaeldoolan7595 A lot of this situation is because we have come to expect too much for too little. Just think about all the entitled people who want food delivery or are happy to pay £3 or more for a coffee. People these days really don't appreciate how much things should cost, ie there value rather than the price.

If it wasn't for the cheap labour, food prices would be much higher (which we will be finding out very soon! ). That would have meant the "entitled " life style of most people over the last 30 or maybe 40 years would not have happened. Personally, I would have found that to be a much better situation all round as it would have been much more sustainable and there would be no sudden shock and hardship when it all comes crashing down like it will and it must.

@michaeldoolan7595 I am shocked at my stepson and his family's attitude to things. Everything has become throw away with ridiculous waste. No one seems to value anything any more and that has filtered down to life and attitudes to others. I am not having a "save the planet " / climate change rant (it isn't our fault!) But everything that gets thrown away has to go somewhere and we are running out of places to put it. The only time food gets wasted in my house is when the Mrs messes up cooking it and that really gets on my goat as they used to say.

You can thank Ted Heath for how we ended up joining the EEC - the way the question was posed regarding joining or otherwise was very clever. I have no idea what the majority was, but I guess that could be found. In fact, I think I will try to find out right now.

@davidseals4898 Not round here, Lidl is filled with them, it is not uncommon for me to be one of the very few English customers. If you think about it, one of the reasons the Poles shop in their specialist shops is just the same as you see in other parts of the world with a large ex-pat British population. You shop where you can buy Marmite and Mars bars or whatever the Polish equivalent is.

@malcolmcuthbertson3359 I think that you will find many Polish and similar people are actually quite hard working, a good number have more than one job. They pay their taxes etc. Tell me honestly, if you could move to another (lovely) country with a good standard of living and work there for a substantially higher wage, would you not consider it?

@malcolmcuthbertson3359 I am totally in agreement with everything you say, especially regarding what a "brain drain" will do for the countries they have left. Can you blame these people for wanting to move to a country as good as England (I am not talking about the illegals). The big issue is that it is us ordinary people who have facilitated this by wanting more and more but demanding it costs less and less. This same attitude has destroyed our industry.

@malcolmcuthbertson3359 That most certainly is not my solution - I come from about the last proper generation who had a decent apprenticeship before everyone was told that they need to have degrees. In my line of business, it is very hard to still find people who have the skill and knowledge needed and companies are finding this out to their cost. About the only suggestion I can come up with is to force companies over a certain size to take on a number of apprentices each year, but until we get a pretty extremist government, I doubt we will even get close to that. The problem then is who is there out there to train them? I offered to do it before I retired but there was no interest which led to an earlier retirement than the company anticipated.

People who buy coffee and sandwiches in these places are the ones to blame for who works there!

House prices are driven by people who think they are entitled to bigger and better houses than they really need or can afford.
