You should only ever trust people who trust you. Never trust people who tell you that they are telling the truth or make money from what they tell you.

π All those worthless degrees are the product of the entitled generation who thought doing an apprenticeship was too working class for them. There are no more real apprenticeships (with a few very noteworthy exceptions) these days. What makes things even worse is that there are few real experts left in such important industries like (mechanical) engineering to learn from like I did as an apprentice. I was never really given the chance to pass on my 45 years experience and knowledge of my industry, much as I tried to, before I retired. Even when I warned my boss I was going to be off before long, nothing was done.

The world suddenly becomes a better place then.

Those five guys where part of the elite who are running the world today. How do you rate Sunnak in these terms? The CEO of the company that ran the sub was very much responsible for what happened as he ignored advice and warnings from people who knew what they are doing. And who said that these mega wealthy businessmen were honest hard working people? Very few people get rich in this world that way.

Wilko was far from overpriced!

40 years ago a huge number of people didn't have central heating and even my last tiny house in Hertfordshire that I sold in 1990 didn't. No double glazing or wall insulation either.

@andyjosh1674 Both shoulders!

"Be like" - what a vile American phrase!

β @clivebaxter6354 The simple answer is to buy a sensible sized house in an ordinary area like I have in the past. You can then pay off the mortgage really quickly and live pretty comfortably on your pay or even retire early like I did. I am reluctant to mention the 40 foot sailing yacht I bought just before retiring at 62 in case people think I am or was rich or had a fancy job, neither of which is at all true. I was just tight with my money and never fell into the trap of wasting it on fancy cars etc.

@alistairewen9558 If you were lucky! At Mum & Dads house we just had a small fire in the living room and a "Sadia" electric heater for the hot water in the kitchen.

Why are pirates called pirates? Because they arrrghhh.

It is quite interesting that when I was at school, nearly all the teachers were out and out Tories with some even standing as councillors etc. Now that the "masses" have been going to university in great numbers it seems to be the opposite.
6
The same reason so many people died on the Titanic was the cause of the sub being lost. Accounts ignoring people who know what they are doing in order to make more money!

β @twistedsister2568 My other half rents her house out and the way it gets treated by many tennants is shocking. Why tennants cannot be made to look after the property I cannot understand.
6
β @JohnJohnson-vd2hp The problem with America is not gun ownership but cultural. Just look at Switzerland for a country where a great many people have guns but the violent crime level is very low.
6
@JohnJohnson-vd2hp Nothing wrong with fair and just controls on gun ownership. Even up to the Hungerford incident, had the rules been followed and the police had done their jobs we would not have had any problems.
6
Sadly with the way people seem so happy to get into debt just to have the latest of everything and get meals delivered, many do not really own anything and believe that they are happy because of all the material things round them. That is a major cause of many of the problems around us today.

The fringe is notorious for un-funny jokes just like modern art is for drawings that look like they were drawn by a 7 year old.
6
I am surprised he was allowed to do things that could possibly be slightly dangerous these days! When I was at school, boys did metal work and wood work- not every one was good at them but for some guys it really gave them a chance to excel and a good future.
6
@topfuelteddy My carefulness with money came from growing up pretty poor (in poverty it would be called today). My 4 siblings have all done pretty well for themselves too.
5
@dontuno My first two places didn't have fireplaces, 1st a studio flat built in around 1983 (not even a gas supply) & the 2nd one bed starter home, built late70s. None of the houses on that estate had gas or fire places.
5
@clivebaxter6354 That is why it is so important to pay your mortgage of asap. It was like a Β£1500 a month pay rise when I paid mine off and that went straight into my company pension and was boosted by them adding to it in proportion.
4
@alistairewen9558 Same upbringing as me by the sounds of things.
4
Buy to let is the province of dodgy builders and the like. They do it purely out of greed but now it is starting to backfire on them. They are the people who have pushed house prices so high.
4
Or just making himself feel better and make more money?

Anyone who was upset by this spoof anti Christmas advert must be as pathetic or probably even more so than those who though Little Britain was racist. It shows how feeble we have become when people start to get upset by adverts. They are put in so you can pop to the loo or get a cuppa or even, heaven forbid, put the box on mute and chat with your other half. I have even been known to read an article in a magazine. Mind you, if you record stuff you can skip the adverts all together.

Wilko's old stores would make great 'Spoons.

@johnholmes6541 Not heard that one!
3
@Gordon Bird You mean they were wicked colonialists before we were?
3
β @johnholmes5674 Sounds like the civil service!
3
β @carolevans5285 I have seen more comments and bragging about those who did on line.
3
Is this part of the campaign to make us all fear?
3
@redbeard3923 Do they do a double ended rabbit then?
3
@wrongthinker843 I am far more interested in people who think than those who can't for themselves.
3
What about all the guys who go to the gym to look at other guys?
3
Given the huge number of FB's it is about time this happened.

β@maxthecat4632You must be a diversity recruitment consultant.
2
@savannahglebe5165 I would like to say here, here, but being retired following 45 plus years honest work I would feel a bit contradictory.
2
@RecoveringPessimist1 We certainly don't need many more people on this island, just look at how busy the roads are in most cities and towns and how good farmland is being built on. The current economic model that relies on an ever increasing population and thus market but anyone knows you cannot go on forever like that.
2
@sonyasmith1991 I don't think you fully understood what I was saying about the cost of producing food. There is a big lag between preparing the ground and sowing the seeds and harvesting the crops. The harvesting might be a little cheaper this year but that doesn't change the fact that the crops cost twice as much to grow.
2
@sonyasmith1991 I don't think many people really grasp how all that stuff works.
2
This weather is all part of a communist plot to discredit the far right and to prove the climate is changing.
2
Send them up chimnies and down mines and the really dumb ones can scare the birds off the crops.

I really wish they would do this on the estate where I live to try and stop the foreign taxi and bus drivers speeding round the place. It is amazing that there have not been any more serious accidents, but I guess most parents round here are well aware that there are kids about and know how to drive safely (mind you, that doesn't apply to the BMW drivers!).
2
The government has given up trying to educate people for the last umpteen years and have even making people go hungry due to rising prices.
2
But are many of us truly poor? And remember, there are more than a few p[eople who would end up poor after a month if you gave them Β£10K.
2
It is classist too apparently which is probably why there is much less violence among the fans and criminal activity amongst the players.
2
@rorysmith2415 You don't learn skills at university, you learn how to pass tests and often get taught by people with little real world experience. The old technical colleges taught skills in combination with proper apprenticeships.
2
@rorysmith2415 I guess all the people who worked on Covid and the vaccines went to Uni? Do you think nurses need to go to uni to learn their trade? You can't teach caring and compassion.
2
No, it is fining your children for expecting you to leave them your money when they have no right to it. Spend every last penny you have before you die or buy things that can be given as gifts. There is absolutely no reason to pay more than a tiny amount of this tax if you are sensible.
