I am surprised he was allowed to do things that could possibly be slightly dangerous these days! When I was at school, boys did metal work and wood work- not every one was good at them but for some guys it really gave them a chance to excel and a good future.

@tommurphy4094 I am not sure you can blame the government for that one- most companies are run by accountants these days who have no idea about the industry they are in (and useless HR departments filled with hopeless young women) and are only interested in a quick profit with their no thought about long term success. This is particularly true in engineering and not helped by degree educated "engineers " whose only chance to get on is to be yes men.
