A very good observation, you could always tell which companies had the worst management by how strong they union was.

@jpt3640 The American companies have always been hire and fire and de-skill the workforce to make this possible. The better British companies had a proud and skilled workforce due to apprenticeships. UK companies really started to go down hill when they started to be run by accountants out for a quick return for shareholders.

@cdjhyoung One of the most marked things about the BL car range was the "badging" of many models to appeal to certain markets. Basically, one car could be an Austin for ordinary people, a Morris for the slightly more refined, a Riley to be slightly sporty or a Wolseley for the middle class. This really cannot have helped things.

@ontogeny6474 The most valuable asset any company has is it's workforce. Any company can buy the same machines as their rivals but it is the workforce that makes the difference between success and failure.

The story I always heard was that the cops had them to catch speeding motorists in the E Type. Two people owned them where I was an apprentice.
