Very interesting stuff, but there is also a situation where people with other strong views sneak in the by protesting against one thing but linking it somehow (generally irrationally) to something that everyone dislikes. Take for example the Qanon folk - they will ask you if you believe peadophilia is wrong and every decent person will say of course it is. They then go on to make absurd claims about their opponents relating to this. Very similar things happened early on in the rise of the Nazis in Germany but they also offered hope and a much improved life to millions of Germans once things started to get moving in their direction to complete the conversion/persuasion to their views.
