Greed and capitalism is what have put up fuel prices etc.

One of the things that has driven all this is people wanting more & more and being prepared to get into debt for it. I had my first mortgage just after one of the interest rate peaks (up around where it is now) but it went down like always happens and I was able to start to pay it off early. As soon as I possibly could I scraped & saved to pay off my mortgage which meant that all of a sudden I had the equivalent of a £1000 plus a month pay rise before tax (probably actually a little more).

@marywest6844 I have now retired and bought a large yacht for the same price that I paid for my house, effectively with cash! Not bad for a pretty ordinary job in engineering.

@paulm5443 I didn't say in the west, and thereby hangs the issue. We have all (with some exceptions) let ourselves be led into this situation by wanting more and more because we have seen it on the TV or internet. I admit that I have more than a few "toys" as I like to call anything that you can easily live without but make the quality of life better. None of these are advertised on MSM or glamourised by reality TV etc. Actually, most (boring) people in the UK would frown on the toys in my special cupboard. It is the endless desire for more and bigger that has ruined things. How many people have huge TVs in their homes, sometimes more than one. What about all those 5 bedroom houses that are lived in by families with just 1 or 2 kids?

@kevt6151 I can honestly say I hardly understood a word of what you have written it is so badly spelt & full of major errors. My English is not the best, as evidenced by my grade 2 CSE, but I hope it is way better than yours. We were all ignorant but some of us continue to learn each day and admit that we are doing so. As for a small town on the Isle of Wight, what on earth has that got to do with it, other than that is where the famous giant lizard theory man lives?

@mariahewitt9787 There is a lot to be said for a benevolent monarchy as opposed to a corrupt democracy!

The sad thing these days in the UK is that we are effectively being run by America and their "dream" lifestyle is being forced on us. Anyone who has a mortgage, finance on their car and anything else in their homes effectively owns little or nothing and have been fooled into thinking that they are happy.

@roblet5047 Lucky you have two places (like us) - ever thought of renting one out?
1
@paulm5443 The answer must lie in the countries that don't seem to be suffering like us then?
1
@roblet5047 Good on you, trouble is, nowadays few people believe that they should "get by" and just want more and more. The world simply cannot go on like that!

As soon as someone suggests that these companies should be taxed heavily or fined, they are branded left wing or commies. Where does that come from?
1
@jeffpliskin Quite right, it is rampant capitalism and greed, the enemy of socialism and communism.

I just hop6I am not being too ironic for Yankees

Property is theft, as the Anarchists used to say.

@kevt6151 WOW, I didn't know weed was part of the Christian way!

@louisedagenais1795 Kill the rich, property is theft?

@ArthurPenndragon9.2.2 I was not being rude, but using irony to highlight the stupidity of what some commentators on here did have been saying. I know irony is not always understood by some, Americans in particular. Just think of the people who get upset over Alf Garnet (watch some of his old videos on here).

I cannot understand why we have let things get this way - even helped it to happen. This stupid belief that you can buy happiness. Ordinary people spending £20K on a car that can do 150 mph just to drive it 10 miles to work every day averaging 40 if they are lucky but more like 30. Huge TVs, a TV in ever room, 5 bed houses when they have 2 kids. Never having any time to really live as they are too busy working to pay for all this. The traditional French view on life that you work to be able to live rather than the English live to work view. Get out and do things and save your money for stuff that actually makes life better - that has been my policy since childhood and it has paid off very well!

At least the Palestinians are fighting the scum who are running our world at present!
1
@colinmeehan791 That is only because too many people bought into the capitalist dream! Had we not become obsessed with the "more, more, more " culture and been willing to sell our souls for it, they would never have got the money to buy the power!
1
@sausage6984 Those corporations that people seem to want to throw money at because they are obsessed with material things.
1
@donbennett5353 And who will replace them? Unless some people from ordinary backgrounds stand up, nothing will change. The problem with that though is decent people won't promise the impossible or try to bribe just enough of the voters to get in power.
1
@des_smith7658 We have more to fear from America than we do from Russia or China. They are converting the UK to another state culturally and economically.
1
@El Eleven The Russian revolution tried to overthrow them but has since become corrupt itself.

Surely Communism is the total opposite to the "own nothing, be happy" notion? Is it not about making people more equal or as some would put it, to every man, his worth?
1
@p.jonaitis7952 You sound like a Tory MP?
1
@Green Grugach Didn't I see that robot in the Tomb Raider movie?
1
@Qingeaton There is an awful lot to be said for your approach, but the pressure from "society" to do otherwise is great and is exactly what capitalism depends upon.
