War is very profitable for certain groups of people.

Funny you should raise that point now. There is a country that did not really exist as such until around 75 years ago. Most of the population either were not born there or are only second generation. They have been persecuting the original people and forcing them out of their homes for years. At one time there were arms embargoes due to their behaviour. Now things have ramped up and hundreds of people on both sides are dying. Is that the way we are destined to go in 20 or 30 years time?

@Rekaert I think it not unlikely that the French will want to leave the EU before long. Although many of them do benefit from some of the money handed out (quite apparent when you go there) they are still pretty patriotic and proud of their culture. Go to a big supermarket and you will see the regional flag displayed, sometimes huge and painted on the end of the building. There are big sections proudly selling locally produced food. Although their attitude to life has changed slightly over the years I have been visiting, it is still way better than in the UK.

In WW2 many famous people actually fought in the war, just look at my Dad's mob, the desert airforce, Roald Dahl, Vincent Price and a number of others.

@johngwheeler Absolutely spot on (FAC & SGC holder for nearly 50 years). Incidentally it is (theoretically) possible to legally own handguns and even machine guns in the UK but they are extremely tightly controlled to the point of being unrealistic, other than special pistols used for humane despatch.

@janed5077 When I was talking about internally peaceful I was referring to ordinary, every day life. What your examples demonstrate is how aggressive and violent we can be when pushed.

@janed5077 Although the British have been the fiercest fighters in warfare for many centuries, internally we are very peaceful. In some ways we are a bit like the Scandinavians in terms of being honest and trustworthy. Whereas America was founded by asylum seekers and economic migrants who pretty much wiped out the native population Britain evolved as a result of many invasions. What is happening at the moment is very different.
