I did the theory of rotary wing flight many years ago, and even with my high ability in maths it was pretty tough stuff!

To quote New Scientist "In June 1848, inventor John Stringfellow achieved the seemingly impossible when his steam-powered aeroplane flew the length of a disused lace mill in the centre of town."

I think that there are big differences between educated, clever and intelligence. I know some very educated people (genuine rocket scientists!) who are totally useless when it comes to the real world. I know some very clever people who are very uneducated and only moderately intelligent. There are then the truly intelligent people who can work things out that they may have little knowledge of or are very creative.

The first recorded powered flight, albeit unmanned was actually achieved very much earlier by an Englishman - I would have to do some looking up but I believe he was a millwright or similar.

@tc5273 The devil's work- lol. They just don't want to fly themselves like real planes do! (40+ years an engine man, nearly half on helo engines!)

@rodin-06 I tend to think of intelligence as the ability to think - to work things out. As such, I guess it is linked to "Cleverness" - typically what I would see as a skill of some sort. If you are fortuneate enough to be able to combine intelligence with a good education, then BINGO!
