  1. You need iron ore to produce iron for a start and the famous iron work you are describing is cast iron and not wrought iron, the two being very different things.

  2. Henry Cort is a local hero round here, even the badge / flag of Fareham where he lived & worked apparently has a black ground that is linked to his iron works.
