Even the Royal Yachting Association has a "diversity" policy. There has never been any barriers to ANYONE getting into boating if they want to and the few from minority groups who have, have joined in and been accepted, occasionally excelling in their chosen branch of the sport. It simply isn't generally part of their culture in many countries.

@trevormcdonald385 I think you are getting the wrong end of the stick there, the reason you don't get many B(l)ame people at the festivals is because of their attitudes to us "first nations" people.

@T_J_ That is a very good point you are making - Every ordinary English man and woman now knows how bad slavery was and are glad we tried to end it (not very successfully, sadly). Yet we all seem to be being blamed for it and told how wicked our ancestors were (certainly none of my ancestors benefitted from it!)

@josephjefferson9346 When I was at school we had a very strict maths teacher who taught us how important it was to be able to work things out for ourselves - often referred to as being by first principles. Although I had benefited from an old fashioned childhood (eg quite poor) where working things out and finding how to fix things, I am sure that teacher made a big difference to my later life when I became a very specialist mechanical engineer.

In the UK I regularly go for walks in the countryside and rarely see more than one or two other people. I other minority people are worried about negative interactions then I suggest they try the same.

@T_J_ For the first 1000 plus years BC this country was the victim of plundering and conquering and the enslavement of people. Even our language is the product of this.

@T_J_ Actually the subjugation of the peoples of Britain go back even further than the Romans. After all, the original people were wiped out or displaced by people originating in Africa!

@lasigh3883 A good point in some ways, but that is in my case more a question of not considering half of what is being exhibited in many of those to be art. Far too much pretentious rubbish if you ask me. However I love museums of all kinds (I only missed out on the one celebrating the French beret because I was working down there and did not have time). The same goes for many other activities and interests that seem to be almost exclusively "white" for no reason whatsoever.

@trevormcdonald385 I think it was you who made an earlier comment about how the wiked actions of our ancestors made this country great (or something along those lines) so "we" are all to blame and have all benefited. Ironically, this means that anyone not born here or whose parents were not is actually even worse in that their ancestors did not contribute to the greatness of this nation.

@robertaubrey3571 You may or may not "stick out like a sore thumb " but you will still be welcomed in. We can always spot German or French tourists without even hearing them speak, even though we are racially the same people - lol.

@moali7158 The world was a very different place in those days. When we came o Africa we found a culture so different from our own that many people genuinely believed that the natives could not be as human as we were. Their behaviour was considered to be barbaric, even by European standards and the way they lived so primitive.

@lasigh3883 It is not really a question of being under represented. Many "working class people " (not really a term I would choose as to me, every one who has to work for a living must be working class) are just not so interested in "culture" for various reasons. There are a good many "visible minority " people who do not fall into the classic "working class " category and they do tend to "join in" which is often the reason why they achieve their status. I think the biggest problem that annoys us "natives" is being blamed for why people with different interests to us don't share our interests. Yes, we can encourage others to try the things we like to do, but at the end of the day, it has to be a two way thing.

@wasp6594 I too am very working class, being one of 5 kids brought up in a council house and working in a manual industry all my life. This has never stopped me partaking in what are generally perceived as non-working class activities, whether rural pursuits or sailing etc.

@kevinshields3010 Transportation to the colonies is very close to my heart (ancestor sent to Tasmania for a pretty crime in the early 1800s). What is never mentioned by the "slavery moaners" is the way ordinary people in the UK were being treated in those days!

The Great Dorset Steam Fair was a great example of a very white event. Security guards were largely black and several stall holders were Asians but 99%+ of the visitors were white, a good number of whom had travelled from elsewhere in Europe and some from even further afield. Could this possibly be because we are actually different?
