@pathopewell1814 I saw a woman being interviewed on TV a while back saying that she couldn't afford to take her (4 or 5) kids to the beach. They only lived about 1 mile from the beach!

Too low interest rates for far too long, unrealistic expectations given us by the media (primarily TV adverts), the home improvement race and a growing "entitlement" have meant house prices have gone up more than they should. I believe in France you pay tax on how much your house has increased in value unless you are over a certain age. This tends to encourage people to stay in the same house longer and discourage adding too much to the value of your house.

It started to go to pot a long time ago in the mid 60s when people started to become more entitled.

@rogerwoodhouse7945 Fees in the UK used to be very high particularly when you add the solicitors fees (for doing very little with virtually no accountability! ).

£100k was quite a bit for an ordinary house in 1993, my 3 bed was around 80k the in one of the better parts of town. You say those places are now fetching 500k, but I bet an awful lot of improvements like conservatives have been made which artificially inflates the prices.

@TheLastSongbird124 Live aboard is a nice fantasy, but I really couldn't handle a long wet winter with no real chance to dry everything properly. We are basically fair weather plus sailors.
