I bought my first tiny studio flat around 1985 when interest rates were pretty high. It cost 3x my annual salary for quite a responsible job. My next tiny one bed starter home reached 10x my annual salary a year or two after I bought it. The equivalent salary these days for the job would be around £40k (based on what I was paid when I retired the other year).

One of the reasons people believe that housing is unaffordable these days is to do with expectations. I had a young guy at work say that no one would want to buy a tiny one bed starter home like my first house. He seemed to think that a 3 bed semi was a starter home!
