Orwell was the hero of the English teachers in my day, and quite rightly so, but I do recall this book / story being in the mix. I guess it was more about the morality of each character's behaviour than anything political in my days.

The bus analogy is quite interesting - The UK (from Civil Service times) way has always been - Not many people are using the buses so we have to put up the fair to make more money. Less people use the buses so they get cancelled. It seems that in the Scandinavian countries they ask "Why are not many people using the buses? Perhaps if we lowered the fairs more people would? Suddenly instead of one old lady, three people use the bus and the economics start to change and then six people and so forth (this is in effect what the supermarkets do with their cheaper & cheaper pricing). Is this about capitalism or socialism or not about any "ism" whatsoever?

@TheTurnipKing Your last sentence is so true and so wise! When will people start to see that there is actually a "Middleist" (I hate the term "Centrist"!) way to do things correctly for the majority rather than either "side" benefitting unacceptably?

Who ever watched or read about Robin Hood - the well know English hero? Was he a patriot fighting against the foreign oppressors and the wicked church of his day or a socialist re-distributing wealth?

Who out there resents the so called "Elite" with all their power and money running the world? Who out there considers Socialism / Communism to be just envy of those richer and more powerful than them than them?

I only ever read story books or watch movies for entertainment - I do not believe one word of any story nor let it make me think anyone is particularly right or wrong in that story. I failed English mainly because of the literature part because of this. By the way, when I was at school, all the teachers were out and out Tories and anyone vaguely working class was looked down on - How things have changed (probably due to the rebellious people from my generation?

Orwell was a very wise man as he saw through the ill's of both the left & the right. Some of his observations in "The road to Wigan pier" are incredibly true today!

@jhpfdijtuiweruot I see what you mean - and the much deeper meaning of it too!

@nightmarishvisions8539 On the topic of trains, I can't remember which French leader it was who said he wanted everyone in the country to be within a short distance of a railway station (there are some very good videos on YouTube about the old French railway system). By all accounts and despite a lot of reductions to the network, their rail system is pretty good compared with many across the world.

@bakerboat4572 Perhaps you should read my comment about the British approach to public transport compared with that in other countries? It is an extremely good example of why balance in all things is vital for the good of everyone!
