@tsm688 Actually, in a country the size of the USA they would be perfect. As for being slow, when properly set up and used, they keep traffic flowing much better than lights, especially when it comes to complex (5 or 6 roads meeting) and staggered junctions. The Hemel Hempstead example is a fantastic illustration if you knew how bad it was before.

The British use roundabouts, or as the Yanks call them road circles. These cannot break down, lose power or get knocked over. In at least one town (Hemel Hempstead if you want to look it up) they have taken this further to create what gets called the Magic Roundabout. It is truly magic and keeps the traffic flowing wonderfully.

@superdave8248 They fairly recently changed to LED street lighting round where I live (UK). The difference is amazing, no colour distortion, far less light pollution so you can actually see the stars at night, so much brighter that they could probably reduce the number. It also dropped the electric bill for running them and so far, they seem to be more reliable.

@claytoncoolidge992 WTF has this crept in from against an article about traffic lights?

One of the reasons I am such a fan of the "magic roundabout " idea (see my comments elsewhere on here) is that it is a new take on an old idea and it cannot be broken or hacked or fail in any technical way. It takes good enough to a whole new level of can't get much better!

@MichaelKingsfordGray What a random rant? Have you managed to push your clogs (sabots) into the gears of the local water powered looms yet?
