That would have been in the 80s and the generations before that would have paid about what you pay for a months rent now. Obviously have to factor in inflation and wages but even so.

This is why many voted out of the EU, we could see the way things were going with the race to the bottom, just imagine working all your life and getting nowhere fast like millions have experienced, at least the younger generation have more options and haven't yet wasted their whole lives hoping things will get better. This generation will have no pension or job security either, completely sold down the river and working harder and longer than ever for less. It will only get more competitive once robots take over and we have highly skilled mass immigration or their offspring start competing in the jobs market. I don't know why they are still here when they could go abroad and use their FOM to get a job and get on the housing ladder elsewhere without a lifetime of debt and no life. Don't expect the Labout party to solve any of this either, they made things a lot worse last time they were in power.

Thats if the employer wants you to continue into old age as it gets a lot tougher after 40+. Also, will you have the skills, intellect or aptitude to adapt to a completely different career throughout your lifetime as you would be lucky to be doing the same thing in your career. You can't guarantee your health will get you through to retirement age unfortunately, its something most young people don't even think about. I doubt most of your generation will be able to retire either unless you are very high earners and escape the rat race before robots, A.I and highly skilled mass immigration make things a lot, lot more difficult. Also who is going to pay your rent in retirement? Lets hope you have a inheritance.
