We had a wicked storm here in New England this weekend. I went checking for a few homeless I've seen around and brought socks, gloves, hand warmers, large sweatpants and shirts. One lady said she'd only been homeless for a week. She was well dressed, not in the usual ragged and tattered clothing. She said she had been kicked out of her daughter's house. She seemed to be in her 50's and not prepared for the weather. It was really cold that day and going to get colder. She just kept crying so I took her (and I never put the homeless in my car before) to Walmart, and got her a cheap cell phone with minutes, gave her the usual care items, and even bought her a tent because she the snow was going to be deep, and sleeping behind a building wouldn't cut it. I also bought a present for one of my family and told her I had never bought the adults kids presents, but I had saved enough to do it this year. I told her I was in my 70's. I stopped and checked on the homeless men, and saw her take off her jacket. She said she was hot finally. She said her sister has agreed to take her in if I could take her back where I found her. I did. She got out of the car and shouted she had to meet her sister around the corner. Funny, she didn't put her jacket on in the cold! She had my gift wrapped in her jacket when she ran. Why would you steal from someone trying to help you? Lesson learned. Still can't retire. My stupidity means I'll have to work awhile longer to earn the money back.
