  1. it's not tricky at all, and aristotle explained it 2300 years ago: a society in which the citizens direct the activities, and make the laws, is a democracy. currently, that list is short, just helvetia. no others. many call themselves '[adjective] democracy' because it pacifies the cattle. orwell caught this kind of political manipulation well when he coined 'new-speak' and 'double-think.' it's gone as far as n. korea, but usa is equally guilty. what it strange is, california would be a very effective democracy if independent, but the californians do not struggle to leave the national oligarchy. there are several states that would join them.
