  1. nature is big and dangerous. we barely got the bears and lions under control, have a tenuous grip on the nutters who control nuclear weapons, and dr h lifts our eyes to heaven, and points out real danger. my admiration and affection for dr h continues, but in future i will have to open her essays as i used to open christmas presents, while conscious of mixed performance: hope and fear, and fingers crossed.
