  1. if you are wrong for 18 years, you are probably not smart enough to be confident about any revised opinion. otoh, discovering that usa is no kind of democracy is not a personal opinion, it can be tested against reality easily and in a variety of ways. people believe what it prospers them to believe, and only come to reality when that prospers them too. which is largely why human society remains crooked in the face of reality, reality is not what we want.
