  1. no such thing as legitimate elite rule. democracy is rule by the people, every thing else is oligarchy by some small group, rich, or religious, or military, and founded on force. we should get democracy soon if we are to save our species, but i see no sign of progress in that regard.

  3. mr. hedges is wrong. usa is what it has always been, an elective oligarchy responsive to its wealthiest members. it has never been a democracy, madison explicitly claimed his constitution would prevent democracy in the usa. and he has been obviously successful. if you don't know what is reality, or can't face it, how can you change it? when your constitution says, "we, the citizens of usa are masters of our nation, and our will expressed through referendum and initiative are the laws and actions within our nation," then you may say we are citizens of a democracy. but it does not, and you are only civilians.
