  1. usans like to pretend they have democracy, and attendant 'rights.' but they will not make the effort to get democracy, and consequently will be endlessly surprised and often outraged, when they are reminded by reality that their 'democracy' is pretense. as it happens, madison designed an elective aristocracy, which he thought was good 'for the ages,' and which has survived largely as he wished. it was evil from birth and obsolete now, but usans have no thought of change. they cannot. only those in power can change it, and they are well-satisfied. no referendum, no initiative, no democracy, no change. until it fractures, of course.
