  1. the usa is not a democracy, never has been. and its people are not citizen quality. not just the politicians, either. they are courtiers of the plutocracy, as you can see. but the ordinary people are weak- alienated often, angry occasionally, but incapable of the concerted action by a large community which is the strength of democracy. usa history provides insight into the current national character, but does not offer much hope of change. not for the better anyway- military rule is always a possibility. chomsky and hedges are not hopeful figures. they've being doing their best to educate for many years, with no visible effect.
