well, it's not democratic socialism, the scandis are a monarchy, effectively ruled by politicians, so you could reasonably style them an 'elective aristocracy.' the usa is similar, but a republic, so an 'elective oligarchy.' the only democracy among nation states is switzerland. no one would call it a socialism, but because it is a democracy, there a lot of socialist functions buried in their rugged individualism. why is the result so different? history, of course. slavery in the usa infected every public activity, and the results are visible in many areas. the mutual hatred and contempt arising from slavery and civil war makes it impossible to create a national sense of community. division among the ordinary people makes it easy for the rich to sustain their power.
as politicians go, sanders is sensible and well-meaning. but you can be a successful politician without selling your soul, so if he runs for president some unpleasant features will appear. he is old, and has seniority in the senate, he should stay there.
