  1. unfair to say 'fail.' did very well with the materials available. just not quite strong enough to beat ussr. the 'failure' was in appreciating ussr capabilities. even there, came very close. or you could say the 'failure' was in hitler's demand to attack, when the risk/reward equation was uncertain, and failure was catastrophic. on the other side of the world, the japanese were in a similar situation, but had much less reason to think success was possible. humans close their eyes and yell 'charge! sometimes, and afterwards we wonder, 'what were they thinking?'
