the problem began with the establishment of the constitution. that solidified the american nation into an elective oligarchy. thereafter, struggle within the nation by small groups for particular advantage became the only effective political action.
it became impossible to separate national activity from political advantage.
if the usa had been established as a democracy, 'big questions' could be discussed and decided by referendum and initiative. people could agree on good ideas, without getting involved with extraneous questions. but madison wanted an oligarchy, to protect slavery and wealth in general. he sold this plan to the grandees of the individual states, and he delivered: slavery lasted another 70 years, and the rich rule still.
there are any number of toxic effects of oligarchy, not least is the effect on the character and education of the ordinary american. americans are notable for ignorance about history and foreign affairs, and personal aggression is continually revealed in crime and terror at home, assassination, coups, raids and invasions abroad.
and they describe their military adventures as 'humane interventions.' the nation lives in a giant thought bubble, an island of collective insanity.
the green new deal is an injection of sanity into american discourse. and it is so far out of the confines of the national myth as to stimulate incredulous laughter. god help the usa, for they are beyond human assistance.
