  1. for a long while, the swiss 'army' was the swiss citizens, armed and uniformed. by no coincidence, the swiss was the only nation that was a functioning democracy, and only fought in defense of the nation.. the situation is less clear nowadays. every one else* has a professional military, usually under nominal control of a political group. often they conscript soldiers as needed, avoiding expense and civilian unrest between wars. in the usa, in principle, the army does what it is told to do. and they don't complain, so long as they are doing killing, with few casualties. but sometimes people interject an aspect of efficiency, or even ethics. this is silly. you are not defending the nation, you are killing people on the orders of a politician. in my lifetime, usa has given up all pretense to ethical behavior. they have always been bandits, the battle hymn of the marine corps was a list of their more presentable raids, invasions and occupations.. but now, they simply create new language to explain the necessity and regrettable violence used in spreading the usa imperium. i feel a little sorry for this soldier. he has had his nose rubbed in the character of the people he kills for. it's embarrassing. he thought he could get by with skill and courage, but it turned out, if you work for the mafia, leave your conscience in a little box in the attic, it'll just get in the way of your profession. * almost forgot costa riica! they very wisely stay out of sight.
