  1. have to feel sorry for hedges. a moral man in a corrupt society. americans who want to know what their nation is, have ample evidence, in part from hedges. but most don't care enough to learn more, nearly none speak out about the fundamental questions. so this is a society in decay, with no visible chance of recovery. they are also the evil empire of our times, and the decline will be painful, in and outside the nation. god help us all.   2. quaint. usa was never much troubled by ethical considerations, but in recent years a lot of the hypocrisy has been discarded. the cattle are toothless, why waste time with constricting lies? but mr hedges has seemingly not got the memo. how does he get to sleep at night, lying down in the garden of evil. possibly there is a joan of arc psychosis at work, protecting him from the miasma of corruption when he closes the door and turns out the light. 'safe in the arms of god.' best to ignore him people- you are not going to repent so why remind yourself of sunday school?
