  1. no use getting excited about the 'working class,' they have no political cohesion and were never intended to be the directors or benficiaries of usa politics. hedges is a good person, but he sings his song to a nation of deaf-mutes. rather like noam chomsky has been doing for 60 years. and with similar prospects of effect. the parties have not betrayed the workers. they owe nothing to the workers, both are vehicles to power for sale to whoever will subsidize their election process. the people of the usa will have to build a new organization to serve their interests, but that requires a social cohesion notably lacking in usa society. it will not happen, on evidence to date. not every society survives, and in some ways usa is beginning to resemble the austro-hungarian empire.

  2. the parties did not betray anyone, neither claims to be anything but a better manager- for the rich. people who rely on the parties are fools. the usa is not a democracy- and its people are not citizens. they are civilians only, watchers as their masters run the nation for their own benefit. if you are incapable of democracy, then you must suffer elite rule. the suffering increases, but still no one, not even hedges, calls for revolution. well, hunker down, chumps, it's just gonna get worse.

  3. mr hedges is mistaken. political parties are concentrated power,and attract bribery inevitably. since their purpose is to put individuals in power, compromise is inevitable. the attractions of office erode any original virtue, history is littered with examples. which is why only actual democracy has any hope for sustained management of society in the interests of the people. the democratic party started off as the party of the 'landed interest' in post-revolutionary usa, the 'yeoman farmer' whose interest actually shielded the slave plantation plutocrat, the first ruling elite of america. parties have no lasting ideology- look at the 'communist' party of the prc. which now finds allowing some to get get vastly rich is a good thing. and that is why mr hedges and many others, can talk forever without result: if you want general prosperity, you need diffused power, aka democracy. any concentrated power will soon have concentrated wealth, visit beijing and shanghai, if you need convincing.

  4. you can only betray if you are trusted, and no sane adult has ever trusted an american politician. usa chumps must make do with hope, hope much diminished by endless disappointment.. mr. hedges is an treasure, but i think usa does not pay much attention to him. not his fault- there is a chinese aphorism that goes something like "when you sing to cows, don't expect applause." the problem is the lack of democracy. not only does that create great disparity of wealth, it creates a populace so alienated from politics that the people can not conceive of a better life. neither do they have any sense of community, a great assistance to the ruling elite. in short, madison created the nation he wanted, "for the ages," and it's rotting. leave if you can.
