'populism' is the appeal to the people in a society that is not a democracy. in a democracy, the wishes of the electorate have direct and decisive effect, through referendum and initiative. but there are no democracies aside from switzerland. at best there is some variety of elective oligarchy. in those societies, it suits some of the contending elites to stir up the people with promises as rewards for electoral support. this is regarded as undignified by the other parties, as it might instill some aspiration to real citizenship, in a democracy. these other parties respond with their own lies, regarding national virtue, offering a sense of participation as a spear-carrier in a virtual army.
democracy is the only hope for racial survival, as elite rule is always greedy and short-sighted. but it does not occur naturally, so economic ruin is visibly on-coming, and might be preferable to environmental collapse, which has a genuine possibility of extinction.
if you continue to depend on the virtue of your masters, you deserve what they give you, however little. if you get off your knees and start running society for the benefit of all, you might save the world. could be an easy choice, i would think.
