usa is approaching it's 'best before' date, but comparisons with rome and britain are not very useful. there are two aspects that makes usa hegemony nearly unique:
rome and britain never had the unmatched dominance enjoyed by the usa. perhaps ultimately more important, is the impact that modern human society has had on the envirorment. usa is one of the top polluters, and simultaneously one of the least willing to acknowledge or act to reduce this threat to survival.
how will it fall? it will run out of gas. military bases consume money, while adding little to human wealth. they only transfer money from taxpayer to munition corporations, while subsidizing enough soldiers to keep control of some elections. already this dysfunctional economy is glaringly visible in the rapid advance of chinese technology and trade. if we are lucky, usa will fade away like britain did. there is obvious scope for military adventurism abroad, and military coups at home. once the nuclear bombs start to fly, we are all dead, so we can reasonably hope it won't come to that. not impossible, of course.
most likely result? general gabbard will lead a division of [very] special forces to capture the government in about 15v years time. the nation will heave a sigh of relief, as the politicians will have sickened everyone by then.
