if you had any power to change things, you should write a new constitution. but you don't, so even the electoral college is out of your reach. madison had to sell his proposed constitution to the grandees that ran the post-revolutionary ex-subjects of his majesty, king of england, so he publicly explained that it would prevent democracy from ever happening. and it hasn't. madison didn't say so, but orwell explained that the best way to tell a lie was to insert it into a goulash of mixed ideas---- new speak. so usans talk endlessly about why their 'democracy' doesn't seem to perform as they hope. doesn't anyone read, in that part of the world? '1984' was intended as a literary flame-thrower against the ussr, but it is at least equally apposite in evaluating the usa empire.
