  1. a populist is a politician* who pretends the people are citizens of a democracy by seeking their support, chiefly money, and the occasional vote for himself or his desired activities. but he doesn't actually want democracy, as he would be out of a job. no, his catch phrase is, "vote for me and i'll do right by you!" * and a great many media people, who make a living by pretending the listeners opinion matters.
