the first 'democratic' revolution that i know of, was in classical hellas. it seemed to arise from the need for rowers in state galleys. i think marx was right, that objective conditions shape national character, and that's bad news for the usa. the rowers were the lowest segment of the athenian war machine, yet the most numerous and most important. there was a class cohesion there, and an organization, which doesn't happen in modern states. possibly excepting switzerland, which used to have participation in the militia by all males physically fit. so they have democracy, too. but usa doesn't at the federal level, and it shows in the divided and disengaged attitude to politics.
all nations decay, since all have rich and poor. the resulting social stresses cause the nation to collapse under exterior pressure. usa is very fortunate in that regard, defensible boundaries. however, the increasing concentration of wealth will ultimately engender a necessity to attack the rich, regardless of mercenary guards.
nowadays, climate catastrophe adds a new element- soon the great majority of young people will look at their elders with contempt and hatred. endemic brigandage will result, young vs old civil war to follow.
