usa is in the fortunate position of only needing war for an income. the brits burned washington, but no one since has had the will and means to threaten existence. the department of defense is an arm of the wealth distribution system of the usa. so talk about violence is frequently unconnected with what is commonly called, 'reality.' even the occasional act of terrorism is only an inducement to transfer more money to share-holders in munitions corporations.
usa is defended by geography better than any other nation in the world. yet usa spends more on munitions than the next 7-10 nations, put together. this might be psychosis. but in fact, it's just a kind of commonplace mixture of corruption and arrogance. usans don't fear war, believing they are so strong that no one can hurt them.
and this is true. prc and russia could do great damage, but can not contemplate a 'victory.' and contrariwise - either are strong enough that attack would lead to catastrophic loss. they achieve this safety with much less expense, which is why prc will soon be the leading economic power in the world.
usa was built to protect the position and power of the rich. uk was the model, with some minor adjustments, wealth substituting for family lineage. both suffer from the unwillingness of the rich to subsidize the education of the unrich, which inevitably leads to national weakness.
prc has weaknesses built in too, but the nation is so large that more smart people will engage in science, engineering and commerce than anywhere else. for now, make sure that your child has a second language and it probably should be mandarin..
